Mission Statement

To connect children, families, schools and communities with different cultures to exchange ideas and innovation while reconnecting with the local foodscape through an integrated school gardening program.
Gifts
56A $5 One banana plant, which will eventually produce over 400 bananas for school lunches. The students have started to plant banana trees, which take about 12-18 months to produce fruit. Bananas are extremely nutritious, and by eating the bananas at lunchtime, students will be able to concentrate better in their classes.
56B $10

Two children’s books for the school library, related to food and gardening. The school library is in need of all types of books, but books that connect activities in the garden with learning will help children connect learning English with exciting hands-on activities.

56C $20 Drip-irrigation tubing to provide necessary water for 1000sq. ft. of vegetables and bananas. The completion of our 2011/2012 irrigation project will eventually require 40,000 square feet coverage of drip irrigation tubing to cover the entire garden and prevent loss during drought.
56D $25 Contribute toward a deep well pump (total cost ~$300) that will deliver water 50 feet to the surface for the school garden. The closest well (or borehole) is 450 feet away from the garden, so it is too far to hand carry enough water during a drought. Fortunately, once the water is pumped from the ground into a holding tank, (which we have already purchased), it will gravity feed downhill to fill the drip-irrigation tubing in the garden.
56X $ open Support school gardening and cross-cultural learning in New York and Kenya. We aim to increase cultural understanding and agricultural literacy. Understanding and interacting with different cultures is a key skill for surviving in the world today. Cross-cultural interactions can help promote peace and understanding among peoples with very different customs and routines. By interacting over the common ground of food and eating, these youth will learn communication skills that will follow them through life. This project will improve knowledge and experience with agriculture, while introducing a greater variety of foods in the children’s diets.
